About this event
Culture Night Sligo, 2019 promises to be another colourful and creative night of cultural activities for all ages. This year’s event sees the return of our ever-popular, fun-filled Baby Culture Night, as well as Irish language events. Culture Night 2019 is brought to you by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with The Model, Sligo Arts Service, the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Blue Raincoat Theatre Company, Sligo Youth Theatre and the Yeats Society.
Species Counterpoint
The project involves the creation of a 25 minute soundtrack which will be an exploration of animal and plant species under threat of extinction in County Sligo because of the effects of climate change. Interviews undertaken with local people regarding causes of species extinction, fragments of the interviews will then form part of a soundtrack which will also include field recordings and some recorded musical elements from the soloists. In addition to this, a score will be created by Dutch saxophonist Ties Mellema and Sligo based saxophonist Cathal Roche. Produced in collaboration with Creative Sligo.
Between the two performances Cathal Roche will perform his sound installation – The Whispering Gallery from 7:30pm
