A Christmas Jazz at Johnstown

About this event
‘Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,’
The famous opening lines of The Christmas Song, a yuletide classic from 1944 by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells, later immortalised by the impeccable soothing pitch of Nat King Cole and the effortless phrasing of Ella Fitzgerald. On December 17th, perhaps with Jack Frost nipping at your toes, Jazz at Johnstown, in the second of its indoor live concerts, is inviting you to a swinging evening of seamless festive music and song.
A Christmas Jazz at Johnstown promises to be as good as a jazzy Christmas concert gets, with original arrangements of classic songs by West End chanteuse Sharon Clancy and the Chris Colloton Trio: expect the wistfully romantic and, of course, the kittenishly enticing, as we reimagine your favourite Christmas tunes, including Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Santa Baby and I’ll be Home for Christmas.
Jazz in the wonderful winter wonderland ambience of Johnstown Castle is a rare opportunity to hear legendary Christmas standards as they were intended – charming, humorous, occasionally wistful and yes, swinging – from a singer for whom each letter in a song is a captivating word of its own, and from a musical trio who can play a quieter, more reflective kind of jazz, better than anybody.
Breathing new life into some of the best Christmas jazz covers of all time is what will make A Christmas Jazz at Johnstown so special. We can’t promise snow, but we can promise music and love and romance and mulled wine and a very, very merry and jazzy Christmas.
