Jason Moran: Solo Piano
At a glance
About this event
Pianist Jason Moran, celebrated by JazzTimes as “jazz’s greatest young conceptualist,” returns to the National Concert Hall, this time performing solo piano. Drawing on jazz, rock, classical and hip-hop influences, Moran has established himself as a risk-taker and innovator of new directions for jazz.
Since his emergence on the New York jazz scene in the late 1990s, the Blue Note Records recording artist has excelled as a solo performer, band leader and sideman. In addition to his group The Bandwagon, with bassist Taurus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, Moran has performed as a sideman with such artists as Cassandra Wilson, Joe Lovano, Don Byron, Steve Coleman, Lee Konitz, Von Freeman, Ravi Coltrane, and Stefon Harris. Pushing the boundaries of performance, Moran has also collaborated with artists in dance, film and the visual arts.
In 2010, Moran was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. He is artistic director for jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and serves on the piano faculty at New England Conservatory. May 2016 sees the release of a solo piano recording “Live at The Park Avenue Armory.”
“Moran is like no other pianist at work. His improvisations are dynamic, eruptive, keyed to the compositions at hand.”
