Sondheim: A Little Night Music .. At Lunchtime!
At a glance
About this event
Stephen Sondheim is generally regarded as Broadway’s greatest living legend. A composer, lyricist and Academy, Grammy and Tony Award-winner - he got his big break when he was hired as lyricist for Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. Six decades later - now approaching 90 and still working – he is described by the New York Times as “the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in American musical theatre”.
Join Stella Bass, Cian Boylan and Damian Evans on a lunchtime journey through his remarkable and beloved songbook; featuring material from A Little Night Music’s iconic “Send in the Clowns”, West Side Story, Follies, Dick Tracy, Into the Woods as well as the delightfully dark Sweeney Todd; the latter two musicals were, of course, adapted for the big screen, starring Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep, respectively.
Interested in finding a fresh approach to his work, Sondheim collaborated with some of jazz’s great exponents on the 1995 album, “Color and Light: Jazz Sketches of Sondheim” – Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride and Nancy Wilson – to re-imagine his work in a jazz setting, following the path from Broadway song to jazz standards trodden by Porter, Berlin, Kern and Gershwin. This concert cleverly fuses both the traditional and jazz approach to Sondheim’s repertoire, while remaining true to his clever storytelling and witty lyrics. Not to be missed!
