About this event
The second of our GJF16 pre-festival concerts sees a visit to Galway by in-demand Belfast pianist Michael McHale. Since completing his studies at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music, Michael has developed a busy international career as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician.
A commitment to new music has seen Michael give first performances and recordings of music by composers including Arvo Pärt, Valentin Silvestrov, John Tavener, Luke Bedford and Ian Wilson, as well as concerto world premières by Irish composers Garrett Sholdice (with Gábor Takács-Nagy and the Irish Chamber Orchestra) and Philip Hammond (with Nicholas Collon and the Ulster Orchestra for BBC Radio 3).
Thisevenings concert follows Michaels performance at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on Friday 16th September, where he will be a featured performer for Culture Night. The programme will include bassist and composer Ronan Guilfoyle's piece 'Bystanders' which will receive its premiere in Dublin, and its second performance in Galway. A piece for solo piano commissioned as part of the 'Composing The Island' series, Bystanders is about, and dedicated to, all the civilian casualties of the 1916 Rising; the innocent victims of events beyond their control.
A 7ft Steiway grand piano will be installed in Loam for this performance.
