About this event

Sligo Jazz Project has put together a full programme of events for International Jazz Day, Saturday 30 April 2016, with continuous music from 11am until late night in various Sligo venues.

We are celebrating the many styles of jazz, from the modern to the more traditional, from swing to funk, from big band to string band!

The headline gig of this Sligo jazz feast is provided by virtuosic drummer David Lyttle who stops by Tricky’s McGarrigles on his jazz trio tour with brilliant young UK saxophonist Tom Harrison and the extraordinary double bassist John Goldsby, no stranger to Sligo himself, as he has been on Sligo Jazz Project’s summer school faculty the past 6 years running. Please note this is an 8pm performance in a jazz club layout upstairs at Tricky’s McGarrigles. Doors open at 7:30pm so come and get a seat in this most intimate of Sligo venues! This is the only cover charge performance of the day, we ask that local jazz lovers support it as well as enjoying the other 5 free gigs on International Jazz Day!

International Jazz Day in Sligo will help to raise some money for the North West Hospice too, as Sligo Academy of Music Jazz Orchestra’s 2pm set in the Quayside Shopping Centre will be accompanied by a collection for this great cause. Please give generously!

As always, with SJP involved, there’s a little education thrown in, as we are happy that Music Generation Sligo, in partnership with Sligo International Chamber Music Festival, will host a composition and improvisation workshop by multi-instrumentalist Caimin GIlmore, in the Model at 2pm on the day.

The brilliance of Ciaran Wilde’s clarinet/saxophone playing has been a feature of the Sligo jazz scene for the past six months, particularly on his new Hargadons residency with The Eddie Lee Three, featuring SJP’s resident bassist Eddie Lee and pianist/vocalist Patrick Gilbert. England-born, New York-trained and based in Kansas City until his move to Sligo last year, Gilbert’s blues/gospel piano chops and velvet vocals complete the trio’s mellow sound, which features in two International Jazz Day Sligo events at Lyons Cafe (11am) and the Glasshouse (6pm).

Gerry Grennan, one of Sligo’s most preeminent musicians, has been contributing so much to our music scene across several decades and many genres and will feature on Jazz Day in Sligo with his latest project, The Old Market Street Swing Band who will be playing jazz and western swing hits from the past 100 years in Hargadons pub from 4-6pm.

The funky soul-tinged sounds of The Soul Collective complete the awesome day’s music at Tricky’s, right after the David Lyttle Trio’s performance, featuring singers Sinead Conway and “Famous” Dave Flynn with Sligo’s tightest and jazziest rhythm section: Steve Kohlmann, drums, Patrick Gilbert, piano and Eddie Lee, bass.
